As a poker dealer I cringe when I hear that. Yes the house gets the rake and that can never be negative for them. But it doesn’t mean they always win. In blackjack, slots, baccarat, craps, roulette etc the house IS designed to win, the odds are in their favor. It’s different in poker. The rake is there so that YOU can have a game. Not just any game though, some people forget or don’t know what it takes to have a game. You need players, and not just a regular few. You need a big player pool to always have money flowing into the room. How bout service? You want waitresses or get your own out of the fridge and who is in charge of stocking the food and beverage. Security is a big issue as many home and underground games get robbed. What about fair games? Of course it’s the dealers job. We are trained in every procedure that prevents cheating and collusion. Do you trust your neighbors buddy with the mechanics grip and the home game cards? $1000s in the pot and he hits the miracle again and again. What about decisions? TVs? Promotions? A great or even average card room has all of this so that you can sit there and enjoy your game. Sometimes the card room LOSES money, because the slots make up for it. The rake is all part of the equation, so the house doesn’t always win. Either way sit back, watch the game, have a drink and tip your dealer.
