Negative Nancy

There are things that get old in every part of our lives. The more you hear these things, the more they start to bug you and get under your skin. One thing that used to bug me is people whining about everything. This can actually get old to everybody. One of the differences in my profession is that it’s the same people everyday that continue the same behavior over and over.

These people are never happy. They win a hand, the pot isn’t big enough. They lose a hand because someone sucked out on them. They lose a hand because they ran into a better hand, and of course they got coolered. Sometimes I will try and cheer them up, usually without success, but most of the time I can change the subject so I don’t have to listen to that one over and over.

Sometimes I give them the odds and that it really wasn’t that bad of a bear, which really doesn’t solve the problem because they are just complaining to complain.

The hardest one to tolerate is when they are winning hands and crushing the table, then complain about something. Or bring up how much they are still down this week, month, year, lifetime etc.

You just have to realize you can’t win with them and just either ignore them and change the subject with them. That’s just how some people are. Maybe they are at the casino because they have no one to complain to at home like this. It can actually be kind of depressing if you think about it.

I wonder if their therapists just want to hang themselves after sessions with these people, most likely upping their anti-depressants afterwards. I guess at most peoples jobs you have someone like this, that you just can’t ever win with them and make them happy.

One day I came to a revelation that got me through a session with one of my favorite negative Nancy’s. I had just caught a piece of an old Winnie the Pooh cartoon and had listened to Eeyore. I didn’t remember how truly depressed and negative he was until I re-watched a few clips on youtube. That poor donkey. HA. Perfect phrase for a depressing poker player.

So when the player started his usual spiel about how life and poker were out to get him, I imagined that every word out of his mouth sounded like Eeyore.  Watch this clip to see what I’m talking about, for those of you who haven’t seen Eeyore in a long time, or ever.

So as often happens on my tables I was giggling to myself and no one knew why. You have to keep yourself entertained somehow and don’t let depressing things bring you down as well. Instead of saying something to the guy I just turned it into something that made me smile and laugh. So give it a try next time you hear someone who thinks the world hates them.

Let me know if the comments below if this helps you out.

I would’ve said, (in my best eeyore voice)… “I’m feeling grey,,” Sometimes bringing a little humor to their behavior is just what the table needs. Me, I’m just a dealer, I’m there for them, not the other way around. So grin and bear it. We work for tips. If they want to vent and you can’t turn around their attitude then let them vent. We’re like bartenders. Only we don’t usually get to cut anyone off no matter how much we want to. Thanks for the post.

Trust me I know what works and what doesn’t. This blog is my vent and it’s been very therapeutic. I live off of tips from everyone, so I know that I have to listen.

You don’t “have” to listen. Get it that it’s your rant. A good one too. You might check your links, however, because it took me two times to get here, first having to review Amsterdam travel stuff!

I always enjoy reading your posts, but please don’t do this. Dealers talking about a hand or just strat/math is one of my pet peeves (just read your other post on that dealers do. As you mentioned already, it doesn’t ever help, but can actually cause major issues in some more severe situations (2 specific ones come to mind in games I’ve been a part of this year).
